Hunter VS Equitation

The Hunter/Equitation discipline is an exciting equestrian sport with a rich history, offering opportunities for riders of all ages and skill levels. Known for fostering a strong partnership between horse and rider, the sport includes a variety of competition formats, from graceful Hunter rounds to the precision and control of Equitation courses.

Whether you’re new to horseback riding or looking to compete at the next level,  Hunter-Jumper Equitation Europe [HJEE] and via our affiliation membership also United States Hunter Jumper Association [USHJA] and its Hunter/Equitation community welcome all who are passionate about horses.

Hunters

Show ring Hunters trace their origins to the sport of foxhunting, where horse and rider navigated miles of varied countryside and encountered natural obstacles along the way. Modern Hunter classes are designed to test the qualities and attributes of a successful hunt horse. These classes are judged subjectively, focusing on the horse’s performance over fences, movement under saddle, and overall demeanor. Hunter courses typically feature eight to 10 obstacles designed to replicate those found in the hunt field.

An ideal Show Hunter demonstrates good style over jumps, consistent pace throughout the course, and good manners. A well-executed Hunter round should appear smooth and effortless, with horse and rider working in harmony to create a seamless flow from one jump to the next.

‘The hunter course consists of only eight obstacles, based on natural obstacles, where the horse must jump smoothly and at an even pace from start to finish’

Equitation

Equitation* classes evaluate the rider’s ability to effectively communicate with the horse while maintaining proper form and control. The types of jumps and elements that make up an Equitation course can resemble those used in either Hunter or Jumper classes, but the judging is subjectively based on the rider’s position, style, proficiency, and overall impression of smooth, quiet control. Equitation classes are open to Junior and Amateur riders and feature technical courses designed to test the rider’s skill, precision, and ability to guide the horse effectively.

*Equitation means Equitation(Jumping), not to be confused with Working Equtation which is a different popular discipline based on the skills needed to work with cattle from horseback.

‘Equitation classes are the working area for riders who want to perfect their technique’

Divisions Explained

Hunter- Jumper Equitation Europe competitions consist of various Divisions. What is a Division? A Division is a collection of different components for a category of rider or horse/pony.
We have Divisions for all levels and for all ages.

A Division often consists of 3 rounds, unless otherwise indicated.
The 1st round: a jumping round over the course
The 2nd round: a jumping round over the course
The 3rd round: the saddle section with all participants in the ring. The riders then all show walk, trot and gallop at the same time based on instructions from the jury. You are then judged by the jury.

What is the difference between the Hunter Division and the Equitation Division?
In the Hunter Division, the pony or horse is judged, in the Equitation the rider.
A rider can bring out multiple ponies or horses in the Hunter Division, but an extra rider must be present for the 3rd Class.
In addition, it is possible to ride a pony or horse in 2 Divisions.

If you have not participated before, you can also practice jumping or follow a clinic the day before. Our HJEH trainer can then advise you on which Division suits you best.
