H.R.H. Princess Margarita de Bourbon de Parme Appointed New Patron of Hunter Jumper Equitation Europe

Soest, December 9, 2025

H.R.H. Princess Margarita de Bourbon de Parme has been appointed as the new patron of the Hunter Jumper Equitation Europe Foundation (HJE Europe). With her royal background, international outlook, and lifelong connection to equestrian sport, the Princess aims to give a strong boost to the growth of this elegant and horse-friendly discipline in the Netherlands and across Europe. In turn, HJE Europe supports the Princess Máxima Manege, where people with disabilities can enjoy equestrian sport in a safe and meaningful way.

Hunter Jumper Equitation Gaining Ground in the Netherlands

Originally from the United States—where it has long been an established and popular discipline—Hunter Jumper Equitation is now rapidly gaining popularity in the Netherlands as well. Riders of all ages are increasingly participating in competitions and clinics.
In the Hunter class, judges assess the quality, temperament, and jumping technique of the horse or pony, while in the Equitation class, the rider’s technique and effectiveness take center stage. Rather than height or speed, the quality of the partnership between horse and rider is the defining factor.

“A Breath of Fresh Air”

“The partnership between humans and horses has existed for thousands of years,” says Princess Margarita. “What appeals to me so much about Hunter Jumper Equitation is that it focuses on harmony between horse and rider, not on how high you jump. The emphasis is on control, balance, and style, which makes it safe, enjoyable, and accessible to a broad group of enthusiasts.”

The Princess previously became acquainted with Hunter Jumper Equitation during training sessions and clinics in the Netherlands. “I found it a breath of fresh air. The atmosphere is relaxed, and judging is based on cooperation rather than speed or height. That makes it a very approachable discipline, where enjoyment for both horse and rider comes first.”

Royal Engagement with International Appeal

Princess Margarita emphasizes that her role is far from ceremonial. “If you don’t truly understand a sport, you cannot really be part of it. That is why I have literally jumped into this new world—and I am enjoying it immensely.”

She is actively committed to bringing together expertise from the United States, where Hunter Jumper Equitation is a mature high-level sport, with Europe’s rich equestrian heritage. The discipline also aligns perfectly with the qualities of European—particularly Dutch—warmbloods (KWPN horses), which are internationally regarded as the standard for hunters.

Partnership with the Princess Máxima Manege

The Princess’s patronage also has a clear social dimension through HJE Europe’s support of the Princess Máxima Manege in Den Dolder. This riding center has been dedicated for many years to providing people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy horses in a safe, warm, and meaningful environment. The program is led with great dedication by chairman Thomas Posthumus Meyjes, a close friend of the Princess.

“At the Princess Máxima Manege, you see how horses help children and adults with disabilities truly shine,” says Princess Margarita. “The smiles, the confidence, and the sense of freedom they experience are priceless.” HJE Europe will support this important work through donations linked to event participation and by actively involving the organization in its activities, helping to bring its mission to the attention of a wider audience. This collaboration underscores the shared belief that equestrian sport should be accessible and enriching for everyone.

Driving Growth Across Europe

Princess Margarita also expresses her appreciation for Patricia Bade van Motman, founder of Hunter Jumper Equitation in the Netherlands and the driving force behind the discipline’s development in Europe. “I admire her dedication and believe this discipline is a valuable addition to Dutch equestrian culture. It brings together enjoyment, refinement, and horse welfare—exactly what our time calls for.”

Thanks to international collaboration, independent judges from the United States, and high-level events such as the Baran Global Hunter Classic, Hunter Jumper Equitation is rapidly developing into a professional and future-proof platform for both horses and riders.
